Cuacos de Yuste: old village
Review Living La Vera
Cuacos de Yuste is the administrative capital of the Extremadura section of La Vera. It has a large historical center. The Casa de Juan de Austria or Inquisition House, on the Plaza de Juan de Austria, is a good example of typical La Vera architecture, and now houses the administrative offices. Other interesting monuments are the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, above all its 16th-Century sacristy; the Plaza de España or Plaza Mayor, where one can appreciate the special characteristics of the local architecture: arcades sustained by stone columns, some of which were brought from the Monasterio de Yuste after it was sold by the church; traditional houses with wooden beamwork; and the Casa de Rafael Castaño, a noble mansion belonging to Rafael Castaño, the old town scribe at the beginning of the 16th Century, and where one can find the Carvajal family shield as well as a double-lancet window with trinulated arches in the top of the building. In the bright coloring of many façades one can find back the influence of Flemish 16th-Century culture.
